    An integral equation method for a boundary value problem arising in unsteady water wave problems

    In this paper we consider the 2D Dirichlet boundary value problem for Laplace’s equation in a non-locally perturbed half-plane, with data in the space of bounded and continuous functions. We show uniqueness of solution, using standard Phragmen-Lindelof arguments. The main result is to propose a boundary integral equation formulation, to prove equivalence with the boundary value problem, and to show that the integral equation is well posed by applying a recent partial generalisation of the Fredholm alternative in Arens et al [J.     Mit dem Amsterdamer Vertrag wurde die supranationale Arbeitsmarkt- und Beschäftigungspolitik konsolidiert und mit der europäischen Geschlechterpolitik zusammengeführt. Erstmalig stellt das neu eingeführte Beschäftigungskapitel einen Zusammenhang zwischen Gleichstellungs- und Antidiskriminierungsrecht sowie Maßnahmen zur Integration von Frauen in die nationalen Arbeitsmärkte her. Neben der Chancengleichheit als eine vertraglich festgelegte Norm und dem Gender Mainstreaming-Programm gilt die Methode der offenen Koordinierung (OMK) als ein weiteres wichtiges Instrument zur Umsetzung der europäischen Zielvorgaben und Leitlinien. Ausgehend von der Frage, ob und inwiefern die europäische Arbeitsmarkt- und Beschäftigungspolitik tatsächlich als ein weiterer Meilenstein auf dem Weg zu demokratischen Geschlechterverhältnissen betrachtet werden kann, wird in einem ersten Schritt ein Überblick über die Entwicklung des Politikfeldes gegeben. In einem weiteren Schritt werden die Effekte der europäischen Arbeitsmarkt -und Beschäftigungspolitik auf gesellschaftliche Geschlechterverhältnisse skizziert. In diesem Zusammenhang wird gezeigt, dass die Verschränkung der EU-Gleichstellungspolitik mit der europäischen Beschäftigungsstrategie die Wirksamkeit des Antidiskriminierungsrechts schwächt und zu einer marktgerechten Erneuerung ungleicher Geschlechterverhältnisse in den nationalen Mitgliedstaaten führt<br

    Condition number estimates for combined potential boundary integral operators in acoustic scattering

    We study the classical combined field integral equation formulations for time-harmonic acoustic scattering by a sound soft bounded obstacle, namely the indirect formulation due to Brakhage-Werner/Leis/Panic, and the direct formulation associated with the names of Burton and Miller. We obtain lower and upper bounds on the condition numbers for these formulations, emphasising dependence on the frequency, the geometry of the scatterer, and the coupling parameter. Of independent interest we also obtain upper and lower bounds on the norms of two oscillatory integral operators, namely the classical acoustic single- and double-layer potential operators

    Validation of a CFD Approach for Gas Turbine Internal Cooling Passage Heat Transfer Prediction

    This report describes the development and application of a validated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling approach for internal cooling passages in rotating turbomachinery. A CFD Modelling approach and accompanying assumptions are tuned and validated against academically available experimental results for various serpentine passages. Criteria of the CFD modelling approach selected for investigation into advanced internal cooling flows include accuracy, robustness, industry familiarity, and computational cost. Experimental data from NASA HOST (HOt Section Technology), Texas A&M, and University of Manchester tests are compared to RANS CFD results generated using Fluent v14.5 in order to benchmark a CFD modelling approach. Capability of various turbulence models in the representation of cooling physics is evaluated against experimental data. Model sensitivity to boundary conditions and mesh density is also evaluated. The development of a validated computational model of internal turbine cooling channels with bounded error allows for the identification of particular shortcomings of heat transfer correlations and provides a baseline for future CFD based exploration of internal turbine cooling concepts

    Positronium collisions with rare-gas atoms

    We calculate elastic scattering of positronium (Ps) by the Xe atom using the recently developed pseudopotential method [I. I. Fabrikant and G. F. Gribakin, Phys. Rev. A 90, 052717 (2014)] and review general features of Ps scattering from heavier rare-gas atoms: Ar, Kr, and Xe. The total scattering cross section is dominated by two contributions: elastic scattering and Ps ionization (breakup). To calculate the Ps ionization cross sections we use the binary-encounter method for Ps collisions with an atomic target. Our results for the ionization cross section agree well with previous calculations carried out in the impulse approximation. Our total Ps-Xe cross section, when plotted as a function of the projectile velocity, exhibits similarity with the electron-Xe cross section for the collision velocities higher than 0.8 a.u., and agrees very well with the measurements at Ps velocities above 0.5 a.u.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J.     Many-Task Computing and Blue Waters

    This report discusses many-task computing (MTC) generically and in the context of the proposed Blue Waters systems, which is planned to be the largest NSF-funded supercomputer when it begins production use in 2012. The aim of this report is to inform the BW project about MTC, including understanding aspects of MTC applications that can be used to characterize the domain and understanding the implications of these aspects to middleware and policies. Many MTC applications do not neatly fit the stereotypes of high-performance computing (HPC) or high-throughput computing (HTC) applications. Like HTC applications, by definition MTC applications are structured as graphs of discrete tasks, with explicit input and output dependencies forming the graph edges. However, MTC applications have significant features that distinguish them from typical HTC applications. In particular, different engineering constraints for hardware and software must be met in order to support these applications. HTC applications have traditionally run on platforms such as grids and clusters, through either workflow systems or parallel programming systems. MTC applications, in contrast, will often demand a short time to solution, may be communication intensive or data intensive, and may comprise very short tasks. Therefore, hardware and software for MTC must be engineered to support the additional communication and I/O and must minimize task dispatch overheads. The hardware of large-scale HPC systems, with its high degree of parallelism and support for intensive communication, is well suited for MTC applications. However, HPC systems often lack a dynamic resource-provisioning feature, are not ideal for task communication via the file system, and have an I/O system that is not optimized for MTC-style applications. Hence, additional software support is likely to be required to gain full benefit from the HPC hardware

    Virtual Data in CMS Analysis

    The use of virtual data for enhancing the collaboration between large groups of scientists is explored in several ways: - by defining ``virtual'' parameter spaces which can be searched and shared in an organized way by a collaboration of scientists in the course of their analysis; - by providing a mechanism to log the provenance of results and the ability to trace them back to the various stages in the analysis of real or simulated data; - by creating ``check points'' in the course of an analysis to permit collaborators to explore their own analysis branches by refining selections, improving the signal to background ratio, varying the estimation of parameters, etc.; - by facilitating the audit of an analysis and the reproduction of its results by a different group, or in a peer review context. We describe a prototype for the analysis of data from the CMS experiment based on the virtual data system Chimera and the object-oriented data analysis framework ROOT.     The basement of the North China Craton can be divided into the Eastern and Western Blocks and the Central Zone (Trans-North China Orogen). The West Block formed by the amalgamation of the Ordos Block in the south and the Yinshan Block in the north 1.9-2.0 Ga ago.
